VPA™
Vortex Powered Aeration

Patented vortex aeration system by Vortech Water Solutions. Uses kinetic energy to create a highly efficient vortex that transfers oxygen into the wastewater stream with far lower energy consumption than conventional aeration systems — no submerged diffusers, no large compressors.

Vortex aeration — simple, reliable and efficient

The VPA™ (Vortex Powered Aeration) is the proprietary technology of Vortech Water Solutions Ltd., developed to overcome the limitations of traditional aeration systems. Instead of submerged diffusers or conventional surface aerators, the VPA creates a powerful hydrodynamic vortex that naturally and continuously mixes air and wastewater.

The circulation chamber and column pump inject air at the system inlet, generating a spiral flow that maximises air-liquid contact and efficiently dissolves oxygen throughout the tank. The result is high-performance biological aeration with a reduced footprint, without the complexity and maintenance cost of traditional fine bubble diffusion systems.

No submerged diffusers: eliminates the primary maintenance bottleneck in aeration systems — cleaning, clogging and membrane replacement.
Real-time DO control: pump speed is continuously adjusted to maintain dissolved oxygen at the defined set-point, optimising energy consumption.
Direct retrofit: designed to replace existing aeration systems without extensive civil works, reducing cost and implementation time.
Versatile application: compatible with activated sludge (ASP), membrane bioreactors (MBR), aerated lagoons and stabilisation ponds.

Vortex Technology

Circular chamber creates spiral flow — maximum air-liquid contact area with no submerged mechanical parts.

Intelligent DO Control

Pump speed is automatically modulated to reach and maintain the dissolved oxygen set-point.

Simplified Access

Top-mounted pump access hatch allows maintenance without tank dewatering or confined space entry.

Modular Scaling

Multiple VPA units operate in parallel to meet any project capacity, from small WWTPs to large industrial facilities.

VPA™ Components

Each component is engineered to maximise aeration efficiency and minimise maintenance requirements

Air Intake

Atmospheric air drawn into the top of the unit — no high-pressure compressor required, leveraging system kinetics.

Circulation Chamber

Upper circular chamber that induces vortex motion, ensuring uniform mixing of air and wastewater.

Inlet Column

Guides directed wastewater flow into the circulation chamber, sustaining the vortex.

Column Pump

Axial flow pump integrated into the side column — responsible for circulation and regulating oxygen transfer.

Pump Access Hatch

Surface-level access to the pump assembly — no diving or tank dewatering required for maintenance.

Outlet Duct

Evenly distributes aerated effluent back into the tank, completing the circulation and aeration cycle.

Operating Principle

1
Air Admission

Atmospheric air enters through the top intake of the VPA unit without a high-pressure compressor.

2
Vortex Generation

The column pump drives wastewater through the inlet column, creating spiral flow in the circulation chamber.

3
O₂ Transfer

Vortex motion creates high air-liquid contact surface area, efficiently dissolving oxygen throughout the tank.

4
Return to Tank

Aerated effluent is evenly distributed via the outlet duct, completing the cycle and promoting homogeneous mixing.

5
Automatic Control

DO sensor continuously monitors dissolved oxygen levels and adjusts pump speed to maintain the set-point.

6
Energy Optimisation

Demand-driven pump modulation eliminates the energy waste typical of fixed-speed aeration systems.

Where VPA™ Is Applied

Versatile technology adapted to different biological treatment processes

Activated Sludge (ASP)

Replaces or complements aeration systems in municipal and industrial activated sludge tanks, ensuring stable and efficient DO levels.

Membrane Bioreactors (MBR)

High-quality aeration for MBR systems — compatible with the stringent DO requirements of membrane bioreactor processes.

Industrial Effluents

Biological treatment of wastewater from food and beverage, pulp and paper, chemical, pharmaceutical, and other high-load industries.

Aerated Lagoons

Upgrade existing aerated lagoons with VPA to increase treatment capacity without constructing new tanks.

Retrofit of Existing Systems

Replace deteriorating fine bubble diffusers or surface aerators without civil works or extended dewatering.

Small & Mid-size WWTPs

Modular and compact, VPA adapts to small and medium-sized treatment plants requiring efficient aeration at low operating cost.
